Toothbrush Advice

At River Oak Dental, we often get asked what the best toothbrush is. We know there are literally thousands of choices on the market and it can become overwhelming. Is an electric toothbrush better than a standard? Don’t worry, we have you covered!

What is the Best Toothbrush to Use?

As you can imagine, at River Oak Dental we’re very passionate about toothcare and your overall oral health. Since we only get to see you twice a year, it’s important for us to be able to offer you all the advice you need for proper tooth care at home. We can offer personal advice during your bi-annual exams if needed. However, along with regular flossing and using fluoride toothpaste, we recommend the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean electric toothbrush for most of our patients.

Are Standard Toothbrushes or Electric Toothbrushes Better?

Powered or electric toothbrushes offer a more effective cleaning solution that traditional toothbrushes. Though, we feel that the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean offers the most superior option. When choosing any toothbrush, make sure that the size and shape fit comfortably in your mouth. Keep in mind that smaller heads will make it easier to access hard to reach places while brushing. We also recommend that you choose soft bristles for your toothbrush. Softer bristles work well to clean away plaque and small food particles without damaging your teeth and gums the way harder bristles can.

How Often Should I Replace My Toothbrush?

The recommended replacement time for toothbrushes is every 12 weeks (3 months). This helps to prevent bacteria from building up and keeps the bristles fresh. If you notice visible signs of wear sooner than 12 weeks, go ahead and replace it early. Worn, bent, and stray bristles can quickly begin to irritate and potentially damage the gum tissue while brushing.

The entire staff is so accommodating and sweet. They truly CARE about their patients professionally and personally!! I always recommend friends and colleagues to go to them.
